Ulster Literacy Association (ULA) is a unique organization in Ulster County. We offer one-to-one tutoring of English reading, writing and speaking skills to any adult who asks or is referred for our help.
ULA tutors are volunteers from all over Ulster communities, and everyone is welcome to apply. No prior teaching experience is necessary -- all tutors take our specially-designed 18-hour training course and become Certified Adult Literacy Volunteers.
Tutor and student teams meet once a week and work toward achieving the personal goals set by each student. These may include job-related skills; financial independence; library cards; bank accounts; driver's licenses -- or the joy of being able to read to children and grandchildren for the first time.
ULA has been providing literacy tutoring for over 20 years and has already tutored more than 3500 Ulster residents. There are more than 200 tutor and student teams working throughout the County.
We hope you'll review our website and plan to join us.
